Becoming Screen Savvy: The ABCs of Media Literacy for Young Children


SUMMARY DESCRIPTIONMany people are both excited by the possibilities for educational benefits and concerned for the potential negative effects from media (over)use, especially when it comes to the lives of young children. This hot topic roundtable session is designed to demonstrate ways for developing literacy skills in young children using media. This is a hands-on opportunity for participants to learn ways to nurture screen savvy kids.
OVERVIEW OF LESSONS
  • Inter-Activity One: When the TV is On/When the TV is Off. We will discuss ways to build on the activities in the programs and ways to incorporate elements of your child’s favorite shows in your everyday activities.
  • Inter-Activity Two: Storytelling with Technology. Participants will learn two ways to encourage children to be active users of screens by using technology as a tool to tell their stories!
  • Inter-Activity Three: Fostering Ad Savvy Kids. AdSavvy Kids is a game designed to teach children (ages 6-10) how to think critically about advertising and commercials. AdSavvy Kids stresses critical thinking and attention to detail, while playing into elementary school kids' creativity, vivid imaginations, and eagerness to learn.

  1. What (and how long) is appropriate media use for a young child?
  2. When should a caregiver begin to develop children's media literacy skills?
  3. What are some ways of encouraging a young child to think critically about the media that they consume?
